Let’s Talk Lashes

By Julie Fell, Practice Manager

I think we’d all like to have longer, healthy and natural-looking eyelashes, wouldn’t we? I will usually happily go off to have my nails, hair and eyelashes done; as well as eyebrow threading or waxing.

When lockdown began, I found I had just three individual eyelashes literally holding on for dear life!  I have probably noticed this type of thing a little more lately because I think I’ve been spending a bit longer staring at my face in the mirror over the past couple of months, while I’ve had the time!

So anyway, when lockdown began and my natural lashes were so sparse, I wondered whether there was any kind of alternative solution while my local beautician was closed.  I’d noticed a whole host of advertising from various brands about their miraculous serums and seen the photos of people showing off their long, beautiful lashes.  I also thought about changing mascaras as a viable option but I wanted a really low maintenance, longer-lasting result and with minimal faff!

Of course, this came up in one of my regular phone conversations with Laurie and we had a lovely chat all about eyelashes.  She happened to have some stock of RevitaLash Eyelash Conditioner which she recommended I try and she also told me the lovely background story that surrounds it.

This product – and the creation of the entire RevitaLash Cosmetics company – came about in 2006 when Dr Michael Brinkenhoff wanted to find a way to make his wife, Gayle, feel more beautiful.  Gayle was going through treatment for breast cancer and had lost her hair and lashes, much to her distress.  Her husband wanted to help her through her recovery; if only in a small way.  He later described watching her be excited about her beautiful-looking lashes as a “real joy”.  And so their RevitaLash company was born. They continue to give back a portion of their profits to support breast cancer research and education initiatives all year round.

I loved this story and in addition, this particular eyelash product certainly seemed the most popular and well-reviewed.  It claimed to protect against breakage and brittleness and to improve flexibility, moisture and shine for dramatic-looking lashes.  So I thought I’d give it a go.

It was super-easy to use.  A nightly routine of applying a thin layer to the base of your clean and dry eyelashes.  It is like a thin, liquid eyeliner with a thin brush tip which you swipe across your lash line just before bedtime.  Easy!  After continuing this nightly routine for 2-3 weeks, I could see a definite improvement to my lashes.  They look conditioned and were growing longer. When I put my mascara on, they looked positively wow. I did have a few comments about my great eyelashes and I was really happy that people had noticed them.

Over the next three weeks I continued with the routine until my lashes reached the length that I wanted (well…I didn’t want them touching my eyebrows, did I?!) I did worry a bit that they were going to just keep on growing!

I still had a lot of product left, so I stored it in my fridge and whenever I need a top-up, I re-apply for another three weeks to keep my lashes looking fab.  Conveniently, RevitaLash is available in two different sizes.  If you just wanted to try it first, you can opt for the smaller, 2ml tube (approx 3 months’ supply).  If you already love it as much as I do, you can opt for the larger size of 3.5ml, which should last around six months.  Don’t forget to store it in your fridge. I do tend to keep a few of my opened skincare products in the fridge….it’s a wonder I still have some room for the food!

I’ve found this to be a great product.  It does what it says and helps you achieve healthy, natural-looking and longer eyelashes in just three to six weeks and with minimal faff.  Just as I’d wanted.  I should also add it’s very gentle and safe to use and includes anti-inflammatory botanicals in its ingredients.  For long term lovely lashes you will need to continue using it as I have done.  The natural life cycle of our lashes means they will grow to a certain length, fall out and then start all over again.

If, like me, you’re not one of the lucky ones for whom nature has blessed with thick and longer-looking lashes, at least there is an uncomplicated remedy for those lacking in the lash department!

I hated my eye bags!

What could I do about my eye bags?

Firstly, I have to say I had always hated looking at my eyes in the mirror or in photographs.  In all the photos of me without my glasses on, all I could see was these eye bags so prominently staring back at me!

I needed these gone… and soon, please! For years I’d hidden behind my glasses (which I also dislike wearing, by the way!) while contemplating whether I should have laser treatment to correct my eyesight.   But why, when I would still have these awful eye bags staring back at me?  So of course I asked for Laurie’s help.  What could be done? What would be the best treatment for me?

Laurie recommended I have two to three ablative Tixel treatments (ablative is the highest device setting) to blast the fat pads away from my eyes.  Thank goodness I had some hope!

Tixel treatments for my eyes

  • Tixel is a thermal fractional skin rejuvenation machine
  • Tixel employs a hot titanium tip which transfers direct heat to the upper dermis.
  • Treatment is nearly painless, healing is fast and downtime is short.

My Tixel Treatment Experience

After my initial wince – it felt a bit like very briefly being flicked with an elastic band -Laurie performed the treatment with gentleness and precision. This was relatively pain free and to my surprise was all over within 15 minutes. I did experience some slight redness and heat I can only describe as the heat feeling being similar to when you have caught the sun. However, this was minimal and disappeared within a few hours.

And Afterwards

On waking the next morning, my eyes were slightly swollen, which was to be expected.  However this did go within a few days. Great, I was on my way to the eyes I wanted!

Over the next week I did get some dryness and tiny little micro crusting.  Laurie told me not to touch these…so I did what I was told and left them well alone and over the coming weeks these minute little crustings disappeared.  Hooray!

The Results

My eyes looked positively great.  My eye bags had flattened, plus the whole eye area looked generally more rejuvenated.

On Lauries recommendation I went for Tixel treatment no 2 (treatments are recommended 4 to 6 weeks apart for the best results.) Of course another ablative treatment was advised…so I went for it!  I must say I’m so so happy I had the 2nd Tixel, as not only have my eye bags flattened even more but my whole eye area looks fresh. I’m now ready to face the world and not hide behind my sunglasses!

Would I Recommend a Tixel treatment?……
I would definitely recommend this treatment if you suffer with any under eye bags, fine lines or crepiness. I’m so impressed, that I will be booking in for Tixel no. 3 once we are out of lockdown. Here’s hoping it will be soon!

Dry Skin Rescue

The current lockdown is affecting all our lives in so many ways and the condition of our skin, although seemingly trivial in the overall scheme of things, is causing some unwanted issues. Is your skin as dry as mine and bothering you a bit right now? Is it looking a bit dull, flaky or scaly in areas and are you seeing more fine lines and wrinkles than usual?

With all of us being cooped up indoors at the moment and then our once-a-day walking allowance bringing us out into the cool, dry, air….it’s no wonder our skins suffer from moisture deprivation and feel drier than normal. Both environments are low in humidity and will play havoc with our skin’s natural defence barrier. So we need to build it up.

Firstly, we need to give our skin a drink – without smothering it – and secondly, protect it from further damage (any broken skin can be an infection risk). We can turn to simple measures such as reducing the heat of our showers and baths and limit them to just 10 minutes, to more expensive measures such as a home humidifier. Using a gentle facial cleanser is particularly important at this time of the year – but don’t forget to exfoliate (while making sure it’s carefully formulated, so as to not strip the wrong layer of your skin off!)

But please do resist slathering any old moisturiser on your face as, at best, this could prolong the dryness. And at worst, it can cause more skin problems. I personally use all the above methods bar the home humidifier, as well as using my much-loved Obagi medical-grade skincare products. I give my skin a drink with Hydrate Luxe and I’m using Elastiderm to deal with crepey eyes. I’m just starting to exfoliate with the latest Obagi Professional-C Microdermabrasion Polish + Mask, which contains 30% Vitamin C.  I tried it first on my hands and treated my left hand for 6 minutes.   It made quite a noticeable difference! Ahhh….I am now much happier with my Stay Indoors skin.

For any of you who might want to either get hold of their favourite products while our clinics are closed, or who want to try any Obagi products for themselves while we are all staying at home, we are able to arrange a mail order service with products delivered straight to your door. Please ask Julie if anyone wishes to use this service or has any other queries we can help you with.

Meanwhile, stay safe and well everyone!
