Sculptra® has been used for aesthetic treatments for over 20 years, it is an injectable volumising treatment that stimulates the skin’s own natural collagen production to increase facial volume and skin tone gradually and naturally in a subtle way.

Unlike Hyaluronic Acid based fillers, the results of Sculptra® may take a couple of months to become apparent and build up over time with the effects can lasting up to two years. It is particularly effective for those wishing to combat facial hollowness or loss of volume due to ageing or weight loss. In addition to improving fine lines and wrinkles on the face, this treatment can also create natural contouring, filling grooves, erasing shadows and helping to correct:

What is Sculptra® exactly?

The main component of Sculptra® is poly-l-lactic acid, a substance that has been routinely used for years in dissolvable stitches. It is a synthetic form of lactic acid, which the body produces naturally following exercise. Sculptra® is perfectly safe. It was approved by the FDA in 1999 and is both biocompatible and biodegradable.

How does Sculptra® work?

Sculptra®  is injected deeply under the skin using a fine gauge needle. The treatment area is then massaged for a few minutes to ensure even distribution. There is little or no downtime – perhaps some redness, slight swelling or minimal bruising at the injection site – or possibly some tiny bumps on the skin – but these will fade rapidly. Laurie minimises these possible side effects by using the more technically advanced and more comfortable cannula technique.

Following injection, a mild inflammatory reaction is induced, which triggers the creation of new collagen. The production of this collagen gradually increases, with a visible difference in facial volume becoming apparent in 4-6 weeks after the first treatment. The results will then last for up to two years.

The treatment typically involves three injection sessions, over a period of three to four months.

In terms of after care, it is advised that 24 hours following treatment, a routine of massaging the skin is undertaken. This involves simply massaging the treated area for a couple of minutes, twice a day, for the next month.

Sculptra® FAQ

What is Sculptra?

Made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable that stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen over time. Sculptra®  is commonly used to address the underlying cause of aging by correcting mild to severe facial wrinkles.
Unlike traditional collagen stimulators that are used topically and are too large to penetrate the dermis, Sculptra works within the deep dermis to revitalise collagen production. As the PLLA microparticles are absorbed, collagen strands are gradually rebuilt restoring facial volume and softening existing folds and wrinkles.
On average, three injection sessions over a few months are necessary to achieve desired fullness. Laurie will determine the amount of lost facial volume and how many sessions will be needed.

Are Sculptra® injections permanent?

While not permanent, Sculptra®  lasts longer than similar injectables.
As the Sculptra® gradually dissolves, your own collagen should fill its place. Sculptra lasts around two years, but your stimulated collagen can last much more. In addition to your own body doing the work to build the collagen, it is advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle to only further the results.

Is Sculptra® right for me?

Sculptra®  gradually replaces lost collagen, which is an underlying cause of facial aging, providing natural, youthful-looking results.
Sculptra®  might be appropriate for you if:
• You have smile or marionette folds or lines.
• You have chin wrinkles.
• You have volume loss associated with aging.
• You have temples that are starting to hollow out.
• You are starting to develop jowls.
• You are willing to wait for results.
• You are OK with multiple treatment sessions.

What results can I expect from Sculptra?

After receiving Sculptra®  injections, you can expect a gradual increase in volume. Since Sculptra®  promotes your body building collagen, results will not be immediate. The increase typically starts around three months after the first session and reaches its peak four to six months post-treatment.

What is the recovery time?

As a minimally invasive procedure, you will not require much, if any, downtime.
Many clients return to work the same day.
A five-minute massage should be done over the injected areas morning and night.
The massages help stimulate blood flow to the injected areas to develop a stronger initial collagen response and provide an even result.

What happens the day of the procedure?

Like most injectables, Sculptra®  is a fairly simple process.
First Laurie will give you a full medical facial assessment to determine the areas that need volume. Laurie will then mark these spots and apply numbing cream to increase comfort during the injections. Sculptra will be injected in the marked areas. Lastly Laurie will massage the injected areas.
When this mixture is injected, you will see an instant volumising effect, Laurie refer’s to this as a preview of what is to come if the patient completes their Sculptra journey. Patients need to understand this is a journey and what happens during the Sculptra journey.
